Sisters Grace and Mary Nakata were originally from Alameda, CA., but by 1938 or 1939, Grace had moved to Palo Alto, CA. Mary remained in Alameda.Sisters Takako and Tetsuko Morita were also originally from Alameda, and by 1933 had moved to Mountain View, a city next to Palo Alto.
Both cities lie within the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area.Because both families left Alameda in the 1930s, the girls did not know each other until they ended up in the same incarceration camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming, where a friendship blossomed. It helped that the Nakatas and Moritas were living in the same barrack. In 2022, Tetsuko and Grace live in Sunnyvale, a city next to Mountain View, and Takako lives 15 minutes away, in San Jose. Mary lives in San Rafael, an hour north.photo circa 1942-1945
