Three of the four brothers (back row of the photo) would initially live in Alameda, CA. Etsusaburo lived in Sacramento, CA. By the late 1930s, Tomoshige had moved to Palo Alto, CA. Tomoshige and his wife, Takeno, also had three daughters, Alice, Mary and Grace.
Alice contracted tuberculosis young and died. Mary was given to her father’s brother, Hisao (above far right), who was childless. Mary, born to Tomoshige and Takeno, thinks of Tomoshige’s brother, Hisao, as her father. Grace remained with her birth parents, Tomoshige and Takeno. She is not pictured above.
SUENO YANIWA NAKATA (at left and also above) was born February 10, 1862 in Okayama-ken, Japan. Sueno arrived in America on January 15, 1923 when she was nearly 61-years-old. She married Toyotaro Nakata and was his second wife. It is unknown who his first wife was, or what happened to her.
Toyotaro must have died before this photo was taken. Before and after WWII, Sueno lived in Alameda but not long before she died, she lived with son Tomoshige. She died on April 30, 1951 and is buried with her sons in Palo Alto. Most documents spell her name Sueno, but on her grave, her name is spelled Suyeno, as does her 1923 immigration papers. |
