The wall hangings are a copy of the the beginning of Nihongaishi, or Japan history written by the private sector. The Nihongaishi was written by Rai Sanyo (real name Rai Noburu). He completed his text in 1827 and it was published around 1936-1937. It was a best seller about the the rise and fall of the samurai families from Genpei (Genji and Heishi) to Tokugawa, spanning about 800 years.Official histories of the Tokugawa period were written by the government. Sanyo's writing challenged those histories. Sanyo was born on January 21, 1780 and grew up in what is now the western part of Hiroshima prefecture. He was a philosopher, historian, artist and poet of the later late Edo period. He died of tuberculosis while writing at his desk in 1832.Photo circa mid 1920s
